We have a nice selection of malas made of different
materials - amber, rock crystal, amethyst, bone, Swarovski
crystal, jade, rose quartz, carnelian, and more. Malas have
108 beads, and the wrist malas have 18, 21, 25, or 27
beads, though sometimes they are simply in multiples of 3.
Wrist malas are traditionally worn on the right wrist of
the female and the left wrist of the male. Why 108 beads?
The number actually predates Buddhism; the Hindu see it as
the number of names assigned to a deity divisible by nine
and twelve...it represents the nine planets and 12 houses
of the zodiac. In very ancient times the Hindu Yogis
determined that a living person takes 21,6000 breaths in a
24 hour day, 60 divisions of 360 breaths, a 12-hour day
thus has 10,800 breaths. The intention is to recite your
prayer or mantra 100 times per round, and 108 is 'wisdom
insurance' that you actually say it enough times per round,
and very meaningful.
